2025 BERLIN MARATHON

On Sunday September 21, 2025 I ran the Berlin Marathon.

This was my:

  • Second Berlin Marathon

  • 22nd Marathon Overall

  • Fifth Marathon of 2025

  • Fifth International Marathon

Three weeks prior to this I was in Sydney, Australia running the Sydney Marathon, and I had hoped to do better here in Berlin, but the weather became a major challenge. It was unseasonably hot on race day. In Berlin there are different wave starts, and I was in the last wave, which meant my starting time wasn’t until 10:40 AM (This is how they manage to get 58,000 runners on the streets of Berlin). By 10:40 it was already 80° F (26° C). And it stayed that hot for the next three hours. It was brutal, challenging, and at many times I thought about not finishing, what is known as “DNF” or Did Not Finish. I hung in there and took advantage of all of the water stations, and I did cross the finish line.

What made this marathon incredibly special was having Carol Binion along with me for this trip. She met me just a little past the 22 mile mark when I was really tired and just hanging in there. It was great to see her. She was right in front of the beautiful Neue Nationalgalerie museum designed by Ludwig Mies van der and built in 1968.
